Our book club met on January 8th to discus THE GLASSMAKER: A NOVEL by Tracy Chevalier. This month our genre was historical fiction so we voted to head to Italy to learn more about Murano glassmaking in the 1400s...and beyond.
Thank you to everyone who braved the rain and joined for our first book club of the year! We had a lovely group of 10 gather and lots of Italian and Venetian foods to keep on theme and so many people generously brought dessert and vino!
Overall, the group enjoyed the read, but wasn't blown away. We loved being transported to Italy and learning more about Venice and the world of glassmaking. Many of us appreciated Chevalier’s attention to historical detail and the opportunity to learn something new about a time and place we don’t often encounter in fiction. There was also some lively discussion around the novel’s time-hopping structure—how it worked, who moved through time, and what happened to those who didn’t. Opinions were mixed, which made for a great conversation and evening.
